There are 11 JOAD achievement ranks, from Qualified Archer to Gold Olympian. The ranks are earned by shooting a specific archery game. The Qualifying Round consists of ten three arrow ends for a total of thirty arrows. (An "end" is when the competitors shoot a specific number of arrows during the same time.) Since a perfect score would be 300 points the Qualifying Round is called a "300 Round." The higher the total points the higher the rank the archer can achieve.
The first four ranks, Qualified Archer, Yeoman, Jr. Bowman and Bowman can awarded at any time, but the ranks of Jr. Archer and beyond can only be awarded after the archer joins the National Archery Association.
During their first Qualifying Round, an archer can earn from Qualified Archer to Bowman. After the first Qualifying Round, the archer can only advance one rank at a time.
During the fall and winter Ace Archers only offers Indoor JOAD Achievement Awards, since we only have access to an 18 meter range. The range does support both the 9 meter ranks, and the 18 meter ranks. During the spring and the summer, Ace Archers holds outdoor practice sessions where a JOAD member can achieve their next rank using the outdoor distances. Please see the tables below for indoor and outdoor JOAD Ranks.
The Novice bow is either a bare recurve bow or the bare Gensis compound bow. (A bare bow is a bow without a sights or stabilizer and a simple rest.) The Novice bow must be shot using fingers (no mechanical release).
The Olympic bow is a recurve bow with sight (aperture or pin), stablizer, plunger and a good rest. The Olympic bow is shot using fingers (no mechanical release).
The Compound bow is a compound bow with sights (aperture, pin or scope), peep sight, stablizer and a good rest. The Compound bow is shot using a mechanical release.
The indoor round is the Qualifying Round and is 10 ends of 3 arrows each for a total of 30 arrows.
